Coming off a heavy loss against West Coast in Perth, the media focus had already turned to the Demons and their winless start to the year.

After conceding an early 20 point lead, Melbourne kicked goals on either side of quarter time to cut the margin to single figures. Soon, goals to Jack Watts and Mitch Clark had Melbourne in front. Richmond recovered to lead by eight points at half time, then blew the game away with a nine goal to one third term, including one conceded because of an interchange infringement. Despite breaking even in the final term the damage had already been done.

Former Demon Brad Miller played his 150th game.

Lynden Dunn replaced Stefan Martin during the third quarter.

Mark Neeld called for calm, saying "the morale inside the club is really good. We have had some really good training weeks over the last month." He gave credit to his players, saying the club was trying to give them experience on the big stage, but admitted concern for the morale of supporters.

Howe, Jones and Watts were Melbourne's best. Jack Grimes was reported for a sling tackle and suspended for one week. Nathan Jones received a $900 fine for making contact with the umpire.
