Bennett repaid the faith that the Demons had showed in him when they drafted the Western Australian with a first round pick after two injury plagued years at the Eagles. He was complemented on the forward line by a dominant centre-half forward performance by Earl Spalding who only blotted his copybook by kicking 2.5.
Melbourne kicked the first seven goals of the game, before Richmond kicked their first major 25 minutes into the first quarter. It was up to nine goals to one at the half.
Spalding, Alan Johnson and Steven Stretch were the Demons best. Steve O'Dwyer suffered a damaged optic nerve in his eye when he collided with Tiger John Manton. Melbourne officials considered asking the league to take action against Manton but decided against it after viewing video footage. Dean Chiron suffered a shoulder injury in what would ultimately be his last game.
Richmond's Tim Powell was suspended for five matches for kneeing Bret Bailey. Jamie Duursma was reported for striking Allan McKellar, but the charge was dismissed.
