A week after the Demon small brigade had delivered victory against Richmond despite the big men being beaten, North learnt their lesson and shut the Demons down both on the ground and in the air on route to a comfortable win. Even when the visitors did manage to get the ball forward they ruined their chances of victory with poor shooting for goal. The only positions where Melbourne won were on the wings and in defence where the stirling work of Shane McGrath kept North out time and time again.

The Demons' main issue was getting the ball past half-forward. The first quarter was their best of the day, kicking three goals but going into the break five points down. A slippery ball was troubling both sides, but North were surer in handling it and more accurate in their goalkicking. This came in contrast to first gamer Hiscock kicking three consecutive behinds in the second term.

McGivern went forward to replace the removed Rollason and kicked a goal almost immediately, but it was Melbourne's only success of the quarter. North soon kicked two more, and when the ball did go forward for the Demons they couldn't beat the home defence. Nearly five goals down at the last break Melbourne dominated the first ten minutes of the final term but couldn't capitalise and North took command to run out winners.

Best were Dockett, Arnold and Deans. McGowan replaced Rollason (flu) at half time, and Spittle replaced Rodda (bruised calf) in the last quarter.
