The Blues were in terrible form and they were no match for one of their oldest enemies after half time. A decent game had been on the cards at the long break, but the visitors conceded 9.5 to 1.6 in the second half to slump to a heavy defeat.
Melbourne played a fast game, with better system and dominated their opponents with high marking. The large ground assisted their long and accurate kicking, and covered up for their only deficiency on the day in ground play. Carlton won the toss, but Melbourne attacked immediately. The Blues defence held them out and allowed them to set up the first goal. There were no more majors in the first quarter until two late Melbourne strikes gave them the lead at the break.
In a strenuous but inaccurate second quarter Carlton's 2.7 to 1.5 gave them the lead. Both sides traded goals at the opening of the quarter before the Blues went one up and took a one point advantage into half time.
Other than the first five minutes of the third quarter when Carlton scored three behinds the rest of the game belonged to Melbourne. They kicked three goals to none to take a 17 point lead into three quarter time. They continued to dominate in the last quarter, kicking six goals to one.
Legend has it that fans had been promised the debut of a champion Tasmanian player, and when the number 33 allotted to Col Deane ran out the fans were duly pleased at his great performance and three goals. Then they were shocked to find out than it was actually "Snowy" Cannan from Bendigo because Deane was unable to play due to illness. Deane would debut the next week. The performance was the highlight of Cannan's six game career.
Taylor, Chadwick and Davie were best but the entire defence won credit for keeping Carlton at bay in the second half. Shelton was injured in a fall.
Defeat prompted Carlton coach Pat O'Brien to resign.
