Ending a disappointing season against the minor premiers, Melbourne showed spirit against the minor premiers but were run down by a better side for their 9th straight loss.
Leading by up to 32 points in the third term, Melbourne looked likely to cause a huge upset against the finals bound Bombers and were still holding on by five minutes early in the last term when Todd Viney took a pass from Paul Hopgood and lined up for a shot on goal in his last match as skipper.
He missed and Essendon ran away with a 17 point win, kicking 9.9 to 3.4 from the point where Melbourne opened up the biggest lead of the match.
Best were the Febey twins and David Neitz.
Marcus Seecamp was suspended for four matches for headbutting, while Brent Grgic was reported twice but cleared on both counts.
