Biggest win and highest score against Richmond
Well out of the running for the finals, the Demons took out their frustrations on the hapless Tigers with what remains their equal 6th largest score in VFL/AFL history - and their largest against Richmond.
Allen Jakovich kicked 8.5, and Andy Lovell a career high 8.0. Richmond were so far behind that only four of their players had more than ten kicks, and Todd Viney gathered more in the match than the Tigers did for the entire fourth term.
Melbourne jumped out to an early lead, only for Richmond to fight back and level the score 11 minutes into the second quarter. But from there they were finished, allowing Melbourne to finish the first half with four goals in five minutes to take advantage. They kicked 22 of the last 26 goals in the second quarter, for the first time a league game had ever been decided by exactly 121 points.
Best were Lovell, Tingay and Hopgood.
"We played reasonably good footy," said coach Neale Balme, "I can't comment about the other side".
