After winning their first game of the season the Demons went in as favourite against the makeshift Bombers and came out losers. They were dominated in attack by Joe Daniher, who was wasteful from his dominance in the air with poor kicking.
Three times during the afternoon Melbourne reeled Essendon in, but couldn't take advantage and lost.
