The Demon backline were under a barrage from the Bombers in the first half, but when the Essendon forwards slipped their leash in the third quarter they fired away to a match winning 42 point lead at the last break. The margin had still been five points in the second quarter when Rod Grinter struck Darren Williams. Williams was carried from the ground, and Essendon responded with three quick goals.
Essendon managed to open up their lead despite not having any fit players left on the two man bench, and with Paul Van Der Haar on the field despite injury.
Without Garry Lyon or Darren Bennett in his forward line, John Northey saw the side strike back in the last quarter to fall just over four goals short.
Rod Grinter was reported for striking Williams with a right fist to the face and was outed for five matches with a further three suspended until the end of 1990. Melbourne threatened to go to court to try and overturn the decision but eventually wore it. Grinter had pled not guilty.
