Equal biggest loss at Punt Road
The Demons were led out by returning war hero Keith "Bluey" Truscott, back home from Europe on his way to the war in the Pacific. To celebrate his war-time heroics Truscott was made honourary captain for the day he played his 50th and last game before perishing during a training exercise in March 1943. Truscott was given a heroes welcome as he entered the ground, with Richmond captain asking the crowd to give him three cheers before the match started. His mother joined the wife of Chairman Joe Blair in unfurling the premiership pennant. Despite having been away from Australia for 18 months he was presented with a 1941 Premiership Medallion by the chairman of the league Bill McClelland.
Melbourne's problem in conceding over 150 points in their first game of the season had been an inexperienced defence. They were weak in that department again - conceding what remains their fifth highest score ever conceded. It was their biggest ever loss at Punt Road.
For the second week in a row the Demons got off to a hot start with the first couple of goals, before Richmond got a chance to attack and cause them problems. This time the lead narrowly held to quarter time courtesy of alate goal by Smith. Though the exiled Demons were the 'home side', Richmond treated the match as a home game and piled on 10 goals in the second quarter to blow Melbourne away, and although the Demons managed a 10 goal quarter of their own in the third to draw within 12 points they were dominated again in the last - with Richmond booting 12 majors.
Lenne, Baggott and Gibb and even Truscott managed to have a hand in a few goals, including kicking one of his own at the start of the third quarter.
Best were Lenne, Mueller and Baggott. Shearer replaced the injured Smith in the last quarter.
