Hawthorn win by 77 points
The jungle bells were beating for the Demons and captain-coach Carl Ditterich after their sixth consecutive loss. It wasn't the result that was most concerning but the fact that the Hawks were 50 points in front at quarter time. Some fans walked out in disgust at the first change, and many others stayed behind after the final siren to hurl abuse at Ditterich and his players.
Only the Hawks taking their foot off the gas in the last quarter allowed the Demons to kick six face-saving goals and make the scoreline respectable.
After the game Ditterich spoke of his disappointment at the club's predicament. He said "Some of our players just pulled out. They didn't put their bodies in because they were afraid.
I just can't put up with it. If they don't go in hard enough, if they don't tackle to my instructions then they don't play".
Ditterich announced he would play the next week against Richmond, but it would turn out to be his second last match as both player and coach. The club was also fined $500 for Ditterich's comments towards umpires.
