Needing to win to stay alive in the finals race, and for the Western Bulldogs to lose to Fremantle the next day, Melbourne recovered from a slow start against the Bombers to be as much as 34 points in front late in the third quarter.
In the last game for coach John Worsfold, the Bombers came home with a rush. They kicked five of the next six goals, drawing to seven points behind, before a Bayley Fritsch double sealed the result. It was to no avail, the Bulldogs won the next day and Melbourne were out.
Best were Oliver, Salem and Petracca
