Melbourne had confirmed their place in the finals with a battling win over Footscray the previous Saturday, and Collingwood couldn't be displaced from the top two - so bragging rights in advance of a potential second or third round finals showdown was the only thing the clubs had to battle for.
Collingwood looked every inch the top two team in the first three quarters before Melbourne struck back to make the margin respectable in the last term. The Redlegs struggled to one behind late in the first quarter into the wind, and were inaccurate in kikcing 2.6 into it during the second and only cutting three points off the Magpie lead. The Pies only narrowly won the the third quarter but had more than enough in the tank to stave off a five goal last term and still won comfortably.
The moral victory belonged to Collingwood, who could enjoy a fortnight off. Melbourne's thoughts turned to their semi final against Carlton a week later.
Barassi was 19th man, entered the ground in the fourth quarter after two earlier appearances where he was unused.
