The Demons got their finals challenge back on track with an upset Friday night victory. They dominated early, but refused to play through the middle of the ground and had to work their way to 6.8 at the half. The wasted opportunities came back to haunt them when the reshuffled North kicked four quick goals to cut the margin to one shortly before half time. It took a Garry Lyon goal on the siren to restore a seven point lead.
14 points ahead at the last change, Melbourne held on to win despite Stephen Tingay (corked thigh) and Glenn Lovett (hamstring) spending the last quarter on the bench with injuries.
Best were Lyon, Hilton and Viney. Neil Balme said "We're a genuine chance to be not just in the second four, but maybe in the top four if things fall for us". By the end of the weekend his side was a game and a half inside the eight.
