Melbourne's big and small players combined purposefully to shake off a determined Hawthorn side at the MCG to earn their second win in a row after snapping a six game losing streak the previous Saturday. Despite the victory they all but dashed their finals hopes by not giving themselves a significant percentage boost with a big win.
They could have run away with the game. 24 points in front at three-quarter time, Melbourne extended their lead after the break but the Hawks kicked the next six to draw within a goal, but time beat them. They were still attacking when the bell rang.
Best for Melbourne were Rodda, Arnold and Deans.
