A shock Round 16 loss to North Melbourne had left the Fuschias on the verge of missing out on the finals, forced to win their last match to make sure of a position in the four. The win was so important that Alf Wilson returned from Adelaide to make his first appearance all year and help the side out. He had rushed to Melbourne, paying his own way, to help his old team in their crucial clash.
With fourth and fifth placed Collingwood and Fitzroy both two points behind and playing sides well out of finals contention Melbourne were vulnerable if they were beaten. Both sides ended up winning their games, but despite going in as underdogs based on their recent form Melbourne also won comfortably to qualify for their first finals campaign in a decade.
Richmond went in favourites based on Melbourne's recent form, but conceded the first three goals and managed just one of their own after quarter time on a slippery ground. The Reds were into their first finals campaign in a decade.
Against the wind Melbourne got off to a great start, kicking the first three goals of the game to settle any pre-match nerves, and they held Richmond to just one goal after half time to ensure that it would be Fitzroy who would miss out on the four.
Richmond started the game willingly, but soon dropped off and were beaten by a faster and more skilful side. Despite the loss of Thomas to injury early in the game their defence was almost impregnable for most of the game. The visitors had their chances but they were wasteful up forward and by the last quarter a finals berth was sure.
Best were Corbett, Davidson and Deane.
The victory was crucial as other results meant that a loss would have seen fall to fifth and be replaced in the finals by Fitzroy. The win meant they finished third and were given first crack at beating minor premiers Geelong.
