Melbourne's 2003 finals aspirations had been destroyed by losing nine games from ten early in the season. Even a pair of victories in round 13 and round 14 couldn't rescue them.
Hawthorn's September hopes still teetered on the edge going into the Saturday afternoon match at the MCG. At half time it looked like the Demons were going to run away with the game, having booted four goals in the last five minutes of the second term to take a 24 point lead into the long break.
The Hawks lost Shane Crawford after he was caught in a heavy marking contest with Brad Miller. Until that point he had been well held by Simon Godfrey.
Melbourne lost David Neitz with concussion early in the game.
Ten points in front at the final change, Cameron Bruce booted for the first goal. Nathan Brown added another and when Bruce kicked his third Melbourne were out to a 28 point lead in the first five minutes of the last quarter.
The Hawthorn revival began with a Ben Dixon goal before a defensive blunder between Daniel Ward and Matthew Whelan gifted Luke Hodge another.
For the second week the Demons had lost a thriller, but this time they had blown a lead rather than fallen short of a comeback.
Best were Ward, Walsh and Bruce.
Brad Green and Kris Barlow were reported by a goal umpire. Green was cleared of stomping on Barlow and Matthew Whelan was also cleared of unduly rough play.
