John Northey rolled the dice tactically when he made a number of positional swaps. Sean Wight went forward, switching with Tony Campbell and David Williams went onto a wing with Graeme Yeats up forward. The gamble paid off, with Wight kicking three goals.
In front of a huge crowd the two sides played out a first term that was low scoring but with all the intensity of a finals match. Eventually when the Demons started scoring the Magpies couldn't go with them, even when they did have their chances they kicked inaccurately. Melbourne were dominant in the rucks, and were sparked up front by a virtuoso performance by Garry Lyon in his 50th game who kicked three goals in the second quarter.
With Greg Healy skirting around at the feet of Stynes and O'Dwyer, picking up 26 touches Melbourne had too many weapons and the battle between finals contenders was over at three quarter time. Collingwood only managed one goal in the first two and a half quarters as they ran into a strong Demon defence.
Best were Lyon, O'Dwyer and Stretch. Williams (cork thigh) and Viney (hip) suffered injuries.
