With their season over, and last placed St Kilda too far away to pose a risk, Melbourne put up scant resistance in allowing Richmond to kick their largest ever league score to that point.

A strong northerly wind favoured one goal and spoiled marking and kicking during the game, but didn't stop the Tigers racking up a big win. Melbourne started brightly against the wind, and attacked for the first 10 minutes before collapsing and conceding seven goals to end the quarter. Melbourne got the first of the second term through Garlick, but then conceded three quick goals in a row and the match was over.

Again Melbourne battled in the opening minutes of the third quarter and registered another goal, but in the last few minutes of the term Richmond added another sequence of goals.

The result could have been a lot more dramatic had Melbourne not actually won the last quarter after being 81 points behind at the last change. They were outscored 13.11 to 7.6 with the wind, and 7.3 to 1.6 against it.

Best were Farrow, Chadwick and Shelton.
