In rain and muddy conditions Melbourne pushed the more fancied Tigers on their shared home ground, but couldn't bridge a 10 point gap at the last change.
Despite the heavy conditions and slippery ball the Demons managed to kick five goals in the first quarter, but they managed just two more in each of the next three - whereas Richmond booted six in the second to take a strong lead.
The gap was cut to five with eight minutes to play but Melbourne could get no closer.
The defeat left Melbourne in ninth, but three wins above 10th placed Hawthorn.
