Fitzroy win by 1 points
Melbourne's hopes of finals football were crushed by their second consecutive loss by under a point. Carlton had come out on top a week earlier, and then it was Fitzroy's turn to break their heart.
Harry Brereton and Fitzroy's Freake were in a neck-and-neck race for top goalscorer in the league but managed just one apiece.
Winger McKenzie was Melbourne's standout player despite suffering a heavy knock early in the match. Alf George also suffered a broken jaw but played the next week.
It was Melbourne's first one point loss since Round 6, 1902. It left them two games outside the four with three games to play.
