The game opened on a bright day, but as the players were leaving the field at half time a heavy storm fell and changed the complexion of the game. Nevertheless South continued to pull away even when heavy conditions took over.
In the first quarter the two sides had a similar number of shots at goal with the difference being that South took their chances to kick four goals while Melbourne didn't manage any. They continued to pull away in the second quarter before the visitors got some respectability back by kicking two goals late in the term.
They kicked just three more for the game, with two in quick succession at the end of the game.
Best were Nolan, Conquest and Peacock.
