Embarrassed by their shock defeat to Sydney six days earlier, Melbourne got their chance to make amends quickly when they won the toss and kicked with a first quarter gale. They calmed their nerves by jumping to a six goal quarter time lead, then had the good fortune of the wind turning in their favour during the second quarter. The Saints got the first three goals, but Melbourne cancelled them out before the break. The gap was reduced at the half but St Kilda left themselves too much to do.
Heavy rain in the third quarter made the home side's job even harder. A late goal to Garry Lyon that skidded through across the wet turf made the margin nearly six goals. Melbourne wasn't threatened in the final term, holding the Saints goalless and reviving their slim finals hopes.,
Speaking about his side's extended wind advantage, Neil Balme said "There is some luck in football, but they had to do the work".
Best were Stynes, Viney and Kowal. Viney suffered a suspected broken nose. Allen Jakovich was replaced in the selected side by Darren Bennett due to a heel injury suffered the previous week.
