Having come off their best win of the season in thumping Hawthorn a week earlier, the Demons put up a fight against their more glamorous MCG co-tenants but still came out of the match without the points.

Norm Smith made a surprise selection when Sid Catlin became the second youngest MFC player in history at just 16 years and 218 days, and while Catlin didn't come on until the last term the team selection gamble seemed to have worked when the Demons were a goal up at first change and just one behind in the third. Their quick, play-on football was bamboozling the more fancied Tigers but time and time again it would break down when the ball went into attack.

It wasn’t the only scare the Tigers got early in the game. When met by a solid bump near the boundary Don Williams crashed through a group of Richmond officials, sending their secretary hurtling into the MCG fence.

By the third quarter Richmond's class won out and they opened up a comfortable lead and went onto win, but not without some nervous moments.

Best were Mann, Johnson and Kenneally. Catlin replaced Bourke in the last quarter, picking up five kicks in the final five minutes and earning promotion to the starting lineup the following week. Leahy was replaced by Smith in the last quarter.

Neville Stone was reported for striking but found not guilty.
