In a clash between the second and third placed teams in the league, North triumphed in poor conditions because they played better wet weather football than the home side.
Despite the bad weather and the muddy ground the match was played at a surprisingly high quality, but Melbourne simply couldn't put a score on the board in the first half and went to the long break with just one goal on the board.
They shuffled their positions in the third quarter and fought back strongly but the pacy North dominated the ruck and held on to a comfortable victory which saw them leap above Melbourne into second.
Best were Bickford, McGivern and Rodda. Noel McMahen was married after the game.
