The Demons returned after the bye, and with a new coach after Mark Neeld was dismissed the previous Monday in the wake of another big loss - this time at the hands of Collingwood.
Former Adelaide coach Craig's first quarter was a disappointment, with his side conceding seven goals to the 2-9 Saints - but after that the Demons all but broke even and showed promise in parts throughout the rest of the game.
In the second quarter, Melbourne were dominant for large patches, but without a firing forward they couldn't make it count and St Kilda ended up winning the quarter. By three quarter time the margin had blown out to seven goals before Melbourne rebounded to win the last term.
Best were Garland, McDonald and Watts.
Chris Dawes was replaced by Daniel Nicholson at half-time.
