The scene was set for an emotional night after Neale Daniher announced during the week that he was going to step down as senior coach after the game against the Bombers. The fact that Daniher would coach his last game against his old senior coach, and 2000 Grand Final nemesis Kevin Sheedy, made it even more interesting.
The Demons opened up a seemingly insurmountable lead deep into time on but the Bombers struck back and with just seconds left Scott Lucas kicked a goal to win the Bombers the game and deny Daniher a fairytale conclusion to his reign as coach.
Daniher was given a standing ovation by fans of both sides as he left the ground and handed the coaching reigns over to Mark Riley for the rest of the year.
The Demons wore a special jumper in support of the Clash For Cancer, an initiative created by Essendon half-back and cancer survivor Adam Ramanauskas.
Best were Godfrey, White and McDonald. Daniel Bell suffered an injury during the first quarter and was off for the rest of the game.
