In a battle of two top teams in average form, the Demons came in on a three game losing streak, while Carlton had a recent record of only eight wins from 23 off the MCG, and were coming off a six day break after a punishing clash with West Coast. By 5pm it looked like Melbourne's season was in freefall.

After a tight first quarter, albeit one where David Schwarz had gifted the Carlton a goal by giving away two 50m penalties for disputing the umpire's decision, the Blues started to pull away. As late as 17 minutes into the second term Melbourne were in front, but by three quarter time they were 44 down with worse to come - a ten goal to one last quarter destroyed the Demons who saw their stars go missing for the second week in a row, dropping to their fourth loss in five games. After having won every last quarter of the year until their round 12 loss to the Bulldogs, Melbourne were outscored ten goals to one in the same period this week.

Peter Walsh was one of the Demons' few winners on the day, tagging the dangerous Scott Camporeale, but ended the game with sore ribs. Whelan and Ingerson were also amongst the best on a terrible day.

Neale Daniher, who barred his players from speaking to the media after the defeat, said "We are a young side that has just lost its way. We are probably not that strong a club just yet to be able to win games week after week after week, but what we have to do is face the challenges that other clubs have."
