Despite the outrage of St Kilda fans, convinced they were on the wrong end of contentious umpiring decisions, the visitors managed to hold on after leading narrowly at every change in a fierce contest played under trying conditions.
After the game there was no water in Melbourne's rooms, forcing them to travel to the Junction Oval to shower.
Steve O'Dwyer wasbest on ground, destroying his opponent in the centre and ruck/roving around the ground, taking contested marks at will. Jim Stynes was reported by a goal umpire for striking Turner of St Kilda with a right fist to the head in the first quarter but was cleared in less than two minutes after Turner denied there was contact. Tony Campbell broke his finger.
