Despite taking 17 minutes of the first quarter of a poor standard game to kick their first goal, Melbourne got to quarter time with a four goal to nil lead. Their cause was helped by poor forward play from the Blues.

The fifth goal to nil came at the start of the second quarter, but from there Carlton took over. They kicked three quick goals, before several behinds in a row had them in front at the half. Carlton should have won by more, but their deplorable kicking on goal cost them a bigger victory. They managed a win of less than five goals after having 16 more scoring shots.

Melbourne showed flashes of good football, but Carlton were faster and played better as a team. The Demons held their own in the ruck against Carlton's state pair, and their defence was sound, but Carlton's class won out in the end. A late goal cut the margin to 10 points at the last change, before four goals to two delivered an easy win.

Williams, Beckwith and McMahen were best. Constable replaced McKenzie in the third quarter, and Thomson replaced McMahen in the last quarter.
