Without a win at Kardinia Park since Round 20, 2005 the Demons went in major underdogs against the Cats in three-time premiership player Corey Enright's 300th match.
The script was followed early with Geelong kicking the first two goals before Melbourne sparked and booted five to one for the rest of the quarter to take a comfortable lead into the break. The Cats struck back in the second and the lead see-sawed across the next quarter and a half before Melbourne began to kick away.
With an 11 point lead at three quarter time the game was still in the balance before a Nathan Jones goal in the first minute gave the Demons a buffer. Midway through the quarter two quick goals to Geelong - including one to Joel Selwood who had been well held by Jack Viney - threatened to launch a comeback but Jeff Garlett goalled from a set shot to confirm a famous victory.
Best were Vince, Brayshaw and Viney. Aidan Riley replaced Jimmy Toumpas during the third quarter .
