Melbourne improved their record to 6-6 and put themselves just outside the top five with a massacre of the hapless Swans that led their coach to say "nearly everyone in the club let us down today. I hope they feel ashamed". Sydney also sat just outside the five, but they never were never in the game, dominated from the first bounce to the final siren.

The Swans continually saw their attacks repelled by Melbourne's strong defence, who were not only clearing the ball with ease but often converting it into scores without their opponents getting near the ball.

A combination of experienced players and youngsters combined to form a devastating combination, and young Dale Dickson came off the bench after half time to boot four goals.

Their fifth win in a row set up a clash of the form teams with top of the table Hawthorn in Round 13.
