Melbourne's recent good form - four wins in a row - was expected to come to an end against a South Melbourne side who had overtaken Collingwood to occupy top spot on the league ladder. In greasy conditions, with light rail falling, they managed to stick with South through the first three quarters.
The visitors were two goals in front after a first quarter where both sides kicked multiple goals in a row. Melbourne dominated early in the second quarter, but their kicking for goal was terrible and from 12 shots they only managed five behinds. South withstood the pressure and opened up a five goal lead before Melbourne kicked the last three goals of the half to cut the margin back to nine points. The scoring was rapid considering the poor conditions but it was more to do with poor defending than any great forward play.
A 10 minute period of domination helped South open up a 20 point lead before Melbourne put on another rush driven by their dominant ruck division. After the visitors kicked away again Melbourne booted two of the last three goals of the quarter to cut the gap to two straight kicks.
Before the game captain Allan La Fontaine had said to a reporter "if we hold South until three-quarter time we should race away with the finish" and he was absolutely correct. Light rain fell as the final term started but it didn't hurt the Demons. Within 10 minutes they had already turned a two goal deficit into a four goal lead, and ended up piling on 10.5 to 0.1 for a comfortable victory. An injury to South's best defender which forced him to be replaced didn't help their cause, and their defence was in disarray as Melbourne's forwards did as they pleased. It was the highest score ever kicked against the Swans to that point.
Best were Frank Roberts, Eric Glass and John Lewis. Lewis was found guilty of throwing a ball at an opposition player. Beames (torn thigh muscle) was injured in the third quarter and replaced by Lock. Fischer injured his knee.
