Last game as coach
Mark Neeld
In a week where coach Mark Neeld had to front the club board and was expected by some to be dismissed from his role he survived to face the club where he had been a premiership assistant in 2010.
The Demons played some of their best football in the first quarter, unable to kick more than one goal and wasting several chances but putting the Magpies on the back foot with fierce tackling and pressure.
Melbourne's resistance lasted just one quarter though, and the Pies booted six unanswered goals to take a 40 point lead into the second half. Unlike the previous two weeks Melbourne didn't have a surprise win in the third quarter and only kicked their second and third goals of the day late in the term.
Wasteful kicking aside the Magpies ran away with the last quarter, leaving the Demons to go into the bye with an average 92 point losing margin over the previous three weeks. It would ultimately be the last match as coach for Mark Neeld, who would be dismissed one week later.
Best were Garland, N. Jones and M. Jones. Chris Dawes was replaced by Luke Tapscott at half-time after suffering an ankle injury.
