A fifth straight loss all but finished Melbourne's hopes of playing in the finals, but at least they put in a competitive performance for the first time in a month. Essendon had internal trouble during the week, and it had caused them to have to bring in five new players - including four returned soldiers.
Many barrackers had given up on the home side, as evidenced by the drop of more than 22,000 from the Round 7 match against Richmond which had started their losing streak.
Essendon got the jump and maintained a lead at every change, but for great periods of the game Melbourne had actually been the better side. They were fasted and higher marking, but the match was played without a great deal of excitement until the last 15 minutes when the Redlegs got within six points of the visitors' score. From there Melbourne tired and Essendon managed 1.5 to hold on and win.
Odgers, Lilley and Allan were best.
