The State of Origin break came just at the right time for the Demons, who had suffered two losses in a row to drop out of touch with the finals, but on returning to club competition they were dealt a shock by the Dockers and Tony Modra.

Fremantle notched up their first win at the MCG at their 11th attempt, led by Modra who had seven goals at half time and kicked 10 for the match. It was a rough night for Jamie Shanahan in his 150th AFL match.

The Dockers had five on the board in the first eleven minutes and questions were starting to be asked of whether Melbourne's run to the Preliminary Final in 1998 had been an abberation. It was not a happy reunion with his old side for former Docker Jeff White, who had a torrid night and was beaten handily by Daniel Bandy.

Best for Melbourne were Viney, Schwarz and Leoncelli. Adem Yze was charged with striking but found not guilty.
