For the second consecutive week the Demons faced a fellow top five contender and kicked a score of under ten goals. After a humiliating loss to Hawthorn a week earlier they had reacted by dropping regulars Earl Spading, Todd Viney and Danny Hughes

In a match that started and driving rain and ended in brilliant sunshine, Melbourne's scoreless second quarter left them with a total of three goals in their last four quarters as they were deposed from the top of the ladder by Essendon.

The malaise of the Demon forward line was best demonstrated by Darren Bennett, who started in his customary position at full-forward, was moved to the half-forward line when that didn't work and ended up playing in the ruck.

Melbourne ate into the lead in the third quarter, but they were unable to get any closer in the last and were comfortably beaten.

Controversy broke out during the week after the game when a newspaper article suggested Collingwood players had called their opponents 'weak' for their performance.

Best were Lyon, G. Lovett and Johnson.
