Having recuperated from heart issues that delayed the start to his Richmond coaching career, Len Smith was in charge of the Tigers for the fourth game. After 78 and 31 points defeats they’d gone close a week earlier, falling three points short of Carlton at Princes Park. The improvement form came to a shuddering halt on the MCG, with Norm registering the biggest win of his coaching career.
The game was over in the first 20 minutes when Richmond crumbled under relentless pressure. A 27 point lead at quarter time had already put Melbourne well on the road to victory, but 7-3 and 5-2 goal differences in the next two terms made the difference even more marked before the home side piled on another seven goals to one in the last to climb above the 100 point barrier.
The enormous victory left Melbourne second on the ladder, but with a huge percentage break on Geelong who stood above them. It was Melbourne's 40th total of 20 goals or more in match - all of which had come since 1926.
Best were Barassi, Kenneally and Jacobs. Massey (thigh) was replaced by Carroll at three quarter time and Mann (thigh) was replaced by Watson in the last quarter. It was a double celebration for Brian Dixon elected to state parliament for the seat of St Kilda.
