Matched against his brother Len, now in charge of Richmond, Norm Smith racked up the biggest winning margin of his coaching career.

A 27 point lead at quarter time had already put Melbourne well on the road to victory, but 7-3 and 5-2 goal differences in the next two terms made the difference even more marked before the home side piled on another seven goals to one in the last to climb above the 100 point barrier.

The enormous victory left Melbourne second on the ladder, but with a huge percentage break on Geelong who stood above them. It was Melbourne's 40th total of 20 goals or more in match - all of which had come since 1926.

Best were Barassi, Kenneally and Jacobs.
