During the week's break for interstate football the Demons had won a country exhibition match by more than 200 points, but back against 'real' opposition they suffered their second straight loss.

Considering Footscray were top of the ladder it was a respectable win for the Demons, but Melbourne had blown their main chance when they kicked just one goal with the wind in the first quarter. They fought hard in the second quarter, but despite constant chopping and changing of players they couldn't get close enough to challenge.

Best were Cordner, Spencer and Beckwith. Wilson and Melville were replaced in the last few minutes.
