After a series of comfortable but unconvincing victories against mid-table and also-ran teams, Melbourne found themselves in a real battle against fellow finals contender Carlton.

This time the trend of the previous few weeks was reversed, as it was Melbourne who jumped out to a big lead only for their opponents to draw closer as the game went on. This time they held on to win.

In wet conditions a five goal to one first quarter was followed by a second term where the two teams combined only managed four behinds. This suited Melbourne fine, as it meant they had defended stoutly when Carlton had a chance to kick with the wind, however they gave up some of the advantage in the third quarter by letting the Blues get even closer.

Carlton continued to make ground in the last quarter but couldn't get any closer than 15 points and saw their finals hopes take a big blow as Melbourne consolidated a position inside the four.

Field umpire Kain left the ground under a hail of fruit and stones after neglecting to pay a free to Carlton's Joe Kelly. Newspapers estimated a mob of 5000 demonstrating against him. A policeman tried to escort Kain from the field and was also punched in the brawl. A fan was found guilty of throwing a stone at the umpire and was offered a 10p fine or two months in jail. A pear hit Kain in the face, and a china cup was also thrown. A boy kicked him in the back but got away. Several weeks earlier the same umpire had a bucket of water thrown at him during a Wednesday League match.

Best were Taylor, Wittman and Abernethy. Vine suffered a thigh injury.
