Another loss saw the shaky Fuschias lose even more ground on the top four, and they had nobody but themselves to blame after blowing a three goal lead at the start of the last quarter.

The two sides had traditionally played thrilling games in recent years, and with Harry Harker back from his job coaching in the country his side extended its lead at every change before being overrun in the final term. Harker had kicked four goals for Lang Lang against Richmond in a match during the year and repeated the trick for his senior side.

The sides had played a high standard match, with Melbourne better at handling the ball in the greasy conditions. Richmond had countered them with high-marking, but the Tigers couldn't take advantage of the fact that five of their opponent's first choice defence was out of action until the last quarter.

Richmond had been disappointing in 1923 and it looked like they were on track for another defeat until they staged a feverish comeback to steal victory. With five minutes they were eight points down, before kicking two goals. Just before the siren they hit the lead to win.

Best were Makin, Allen and Harker.
