Cleared to Melbourne Seconds in the 1939 pre-season, Geary played in the lower grade until 1941. He then served in the Army during World War II.

Joined the committee in 1964 in the year he was named a Life Member and remained in the position until 1979. He was also a delegate to the VFL Reserves from 1960 to 1965.

Elected as Melbourne representative to the VFL Board in 1976.

Geary was the man who arranged a $30,000 deal with Ron Barassi after the 1977 season which would see Melbourne have first option on his services if he ever left the Kangaroos.
