Tied for the VFL's Under 19 best player in 1974 but lost the award on a countback. That year he only finished second in his own side's Best and Fairest. Friedman played Reserves late in the same year.

A motorbike accident curtailed his VFA career and Friedman joined VFA side Preston in 1975.

In 1992 he was retrospectively awarded the shared Morrish Medal.
