A forward, Hosking's real first name was Thornton. In October 1911 he had been sentenced to 12 months in jail in Sydney for 'Larceny as a clerk'. Released in July 1912 he returned to Melbourne and played the opening round of 1913 before being cleared back to South Yarra three weeks later.
Joined the Army in September 1915 and served in World War I. He played in the 1916 Pioneer Exhibition game between army units in Britain. After being gassed and wounded, he was discharged as medically unfit in October 1919
