The Best and Fairest in the 1932 Tramways League, Onley joined Melbourne in 1933, but didn't play a senior game after a practice match leg injury. Played in the 1934 pre-season games and suffered a badly broken nose, before being cleared to Hawthorn after Round 7, where he played three VFL games.

Onley joined Port Melbourne the next year, and was cleared to Camberwell in 1937. He requested to play for them on residential grounds, but Port rejected several of his applications. Eventually he joined Camberwell and played two seasons. In 1940 he rejoined Port Melbourne.
