July 1892 Match vs Richmond

Saturday 2 July - MCG
Crowd - 6000

Melbourne 3.3, 4.8, 6.11, 7.14
Richmond 0.2, 3.3, 3.3, 4.4

Goalkickers: Harry Graham 2, Kelly 1, Wiseman 1, Howes 1, Aitken 1, O'Dea 1

Melbourne played Richmond for the second time in just over a month and repeated the result of their first match by winning again. With Sheahan out of the selected side Melbourne turned to ex-player R. Ramsay to fill in, and he had an easy day out as his side won comfortably.

The weather was perfect for football with no wind and Melbourne were soon on the attack. Richmond's McKay defended stoutly but was let down by his teammates who allowed Kelly to gather the ball and kick the first of three decisive goals in the first quarter. They could have had more but missed some easy chances, including one to Wiseman and then McKenzie.

Richmond were denied a goal when they had the ball through the posts but the ball was brought back for a free-kick to one of their players who subsequently missed.

They narrowed the margin to two goals in the second quarter, but Melbourne kicked away again in the third and went on to a comfortable win.

The match only attracted small crowd due to the big Essendon vs Carlton clash next door at East Melbourne. According to The Argus, Umpire Schaefer was "not as correct in his decisions as could have been desired, and he was much slower than is usual with him".

Best were McKenzie, Howes and Ramsay.
