Cleared from University before Round 2, 1913, Nicholson played one match on the wing in the absence of regular wingman Jack Robertson in Round 12. When Robertson returned it pushed Nicholson out, ending his VFL career.

In February 1915 he enlisted with the Army and served during World War I.
