After starting his involvement in football at St Kilda Dr Jones replaced S. Ferguson as Melbourne's medical officer in 1932 and served with them until his death when not at war.

During World War 2 he served as commanded of the 15 Field Ambulance Unit in the Australian Infantry Force, and had several Melbourne players serve in the unit including George Lenne, Wally Lock, Harold Ball, Rowley Fischer, Adrian Dullard, Shane McGrath and Dick Hingston
