A stalwart of public school football, Boynton was signed by the club before the 1905 season aged 17 but waited almost two full seasons to play his only match for the club.

Boynton moved to Geelong in 1907 and played 13 games that year, and was with University in their first three league seasons, adding another 25 games between 1908 and 1910.
