Played two years for the Scotch firsts and was vice-captain for their 1945 premiership before joining their senior amateur side in 1946. A year later he trained in the pre-season with Hawthorn, and was then recruited by the Demons as a midfielder. He played as an amateur.

In Round 15, 1948 he suffered a broken collarbone when vigorously bumped by an opponent, it was his last game of senior football. He was dropped from the list at the end of the season.
