Graduated from the Seconds to make his first appearance in the senior squad in the 1925 finals after booting 13 in two seconds games. Injury stopped him from playing and he instead made his senior debut the next year.

He played just one season but made it count as full-forward in the premiership side, before joining Ballarat in the Ballarat League for 1927 where he booted 113 goals in his first year. He played in two grand finals - a draw and a loss - and won the league's goalkicking two more times.

North Melbourne tried to recruit Duff in 1928, but he was still tied to Melbourne. He trained in the 1928 pre-season, kicking seven goals in one practice match, but didn't play another VFL match.
